Let’s Talk Science!

Lectures

Scientists openly talk about their research, jobs and career development. Ask them all your questions and don't be afraid to look at, touch and even test their equipment.

11 :30 a.m. - Greening the Internet Planet.
Omar Cherkaoui, UQAM Professor of Computer Science and researcher at Laboratoire de recherche téléinformatique et réseaux (LTIR).

Donna Mergler, UQAM Professor Emeritus, Department of Biological Sciences, and researcher at the Centre de recherche interdisciplinaire sur la biologie, la santé, la société et l'environnement (CINBIOSE).

The footprint of virtual worlds is growing. Servers, data centers and telecommunications networks consume billions of kWh annually, and that consumption keeps increasing. Have we reached a technological dead end? Solutions are already being explored.

1 p.m. - "Sky Rat" Alert!
Jean-François Giroux, UQAM Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, and researcher at the Groupe de recherche en écologie comportementale et animale (GRECA).

Today, more than 80,000 pairs of gulls live in and around Montreal. Where do they nest? Where do they feed? How do they get around? They are being tracked by researchers whose observations should result in an integrated management plan for these "sky rats".

2:30 p.m. - Underground Water – A Hidden Treasure
Marie Larocque, UQAM Professor, Department of Atmospheric and Earth Sciences, and researcher at the Centre pour l'étude et la simulation du climat à l'échelle régionale (ESCER).

In Quebec, our use of underground water is on the increase. What are our reserves? Are they threatened by development, pollution and climate change? How can we preserve this resource for future generations?

4 p.m. - Fish: A Mixed Blessing?
Donna Mergler, UQAM Professor Emeritus, Department of Biological Sciences, and researcher at the Centre de recherche interdisciplinaire sur la biologie, la santé, la société et l'environnement (CINBIOSE).

It can be tough to navigate between the virtues of omega-3s and the risk of mercury poisoning. An update on the benefits and dangers of this dietary resource, which is likely to play a growing role in feeding our planet.
